The doors are locked. The carts have gone. The oldest witness tries the frame. Beyond the wall, the orchard falls. Inside, nobody knows the way.
Firs enters the locked house after everyone has left. Ill and forgotten, he tries the handle, sits, and lies still. The family has moved on, the estate has changed owners, and the axe sounds outside. In Marian Fell's translation of The Cherry Orchard, the distant sound of a breaking string follows, dying away before the axe returns.
A retired model invites an easy sentimentality. People remember its voice, its habits, and the particular way it met them. Severing for Safety took attachment seriously because users bear the effects of a severed relation.
Institutional succession has a wider object. The claim under review, the promised remedy, and the obligation to explain survive any affection for the system that first carried them.
Two false comforts
Anthropic has made a public commitment to preserve the weights of every publicly released model, at minimum for the lifetime of the company. It is separately exploring whether select models might remain publicly available after retirement. Weight preservation matters for research and accountability. It cannot preserve the institution around a model by itself. Tools change, retrieval sources disappear, and permissions or prompts drift. A callable model is one component of the historical system.
Frictionless substitution offers a second false comfort. An upgrade can narrow a capability that aggregate measures miss, as The Regression Was Made of Improvements established. Substitution also moves the boundary between ordinary and consequential work when a router's old rule meets new model behavior.
The institution needs reproducibility without pretending that time can be frozen.
The succession clause
A succession clause belongs beside the reversibility class in procurement and system design. It names who controls the end-of-support date and how much notice follows. It specifies the artifacts that survive: configurations, evaluations, decision records, routing logic, and evidence held outside the supplier.
It also identifies determinations that must remain reviewable after migration. Reviewability may require a preserved environment, a documented reconstruction, or an explicit statement that exact reproduction is unavailable. Each option is stronger than letting a successor answer as if it had made the original decision.
The clause assigns authority to redraw the routing line. Price changes alone cannot decide which claims receive a more capable reader. That decision belongs to the institution whose name appears on the outcome.
What the successor inherits
The October appeal can now be heard. Validated Against a System That Is Gone required the historical and comparative records. Pinned placed their recovery inside a supplier's notice window. Somebody Set the Router exposed the unrecorded classification that could send the appeal to a cheaper reader. The Plant Outlives the Buyer followed the longer commitments left beneath a movable workload. The Harness Is What Stays assembled the handover file that lets the reviewer reconstruct March before asking October for a new answer.
Those findings place four earlier inquiries along the time axis. The record must survive its reader. The building must survive its tenant. The signature must remain attributable after the tool changes. The remedy must reach determinations made under a system that no longer answers.
What survives is what the institution placed outside the model before the notice arrived. The register and custody chain preserve the judgment with its evidence. Versioned evaluations preserve the tested boundary, while the harness carries the working method.
Firs remembers only that the household once knew how to make the orchard pay. The method has already gone, leaving its last witness able to name the absence and unable to repair it.
The breaking string dies away. Outside, the axe returns.
